AllMusic
www.allmusic.com
Methodology
AllMusic is a comprehensive music database which features lengthy album reviews, similar artists lists (including "similar artists," "influenced by," and "followers"), in-depth tagging (including genres, moods, and styles), and information on tracks, albums, artists, and music history in general. The site attempts to construct a comprehensive historical understanding of music primarily through tag categorization.
Pros and Cons
AllMusic is an extremely valuable resource for learning about music and its history. The site's album reviews are top-notch, the similar artist lists are interesting (though more catered towards a music historian than a typical music listener), and the tags are a great way to learn about the general sound and feel of music quickly. AllMusic, however, does not generate personalized recommendations, so although AllMusic is an outstanding source for music information, one must turn elsewhere to find personalized music recommendations.
